 New York Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia? -

Gynecomastia is a physical abnormality found in men. The word Gynecomastia comes from the Greek words meaning "woman" and "breast." It is called so because the breasts of an affected man may resemble women's breasts. It is not to be confused with enlargement from pectoral (chest) muscle tissue, such as that of an athlete.

Gynecomastia in Men -

A man with gynecomastia may have enlarged breasts due to having developed abnormally large mammary glands. This may be a result of the male having a problem with obesity, which is referred to pseudogynecomastia. It is not certain what the causes of gynecomastia is, but there are many theories. Gynecomastia could possibly be linked to hormonal imbalances. In a small percentage of men, it can be linked to drug usage. Some heart medications are known to cause gynecomastia, as well as alcohol and marijuana. It is also possibly connected to steroid usage.

Sometimes it affects adolescent males, but if the condition is not linked to obesity, it may be a part of normal bodily changes and disappear after the child has matured. Gynecomastia may also affect elderly males. For both adolescents and elderly men it is usually associated with metabolic and weight management problems. Although the condition itself is not harmful, it has been linked to other diseases. It may be a sign of a serious disease, such as testicular cancer.

What Gynecomastia treatments are available? -

There are several treatments in New York for gynecomastia. The affected male should first decide if there is a health or lifestyle problem that may be causing this abnormality. If the male is overweight or obese, then he may be able to reduce the size of his breasts simply by adjusting his lifestyle and losing weight. The affected male should speak with his doctor and review any medications he may be taking. Some drugs are linked to gynecomastia in men. Sometimes medicines are available that can treat the initial condition without contributing to the gynecomastia.

The patient may also be prescribed hormonal modulating drugs. These drugs are not approved everywhere in New York for treatment of male breast abnormality, may not interact well with other medicines, and may also be expensive. Sometimes the male with gynecomastia may consider surgically having his breasts modified. The choices for surgical treatment include: reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction), mammary gland removal, or liposuction

What is the cost of a Gynecomastia treatment? -

Since the treatment is considered cosmetic (not for health purposes), many insurance companies in New York will not cover these procedures. Cosmetic surgery is very costly, averaging around $3,000 USD in New York. Risks of complications from surgery should also be taken into account.
